Gun ban this and gun ban that, when was the last time anyone saw the body guard of a person running for a position commit a gun crime? These gun bans are a total crock of bull and I will bet that a lot of people running for office that are not liked by one side or the other will end up assassinated. :th_signs083: Anyone taking bets on this one? Why is it that no one uses their heads and understands that guns in good peoples hands does not correlate to crimes. :AddEmoticons04230: Now I can understand them not wanting average people carrying guns, but elected officials and those running for office not being allowed as many body guards as they feel necessary, that is a travesty of justice. :th_signs083: Now while I surely do not wish to take sides in what is none of my business, since GMA and Noli will be exempt and have all the armed body guards they want, if I was an opposition candidate such as Erap, I would definitely feel a little uncomfortable walking around with just two security men, and both of them in uniform so that if someone who wanted to kill him, they would know exactly who his body guards were because they would stand out, and then they would also know that there were no other armed men or women in the crowd to protect him. Anyone want to take bets how all this is going to play out? and why this election is sizing up to be very different than any other election of the past?? I really fear the Philippines is heading toward a bloody revolution. A TOTAL gun ban would be in place in the country from Jan. 10 to June 9 to lessen election related violence. Commission on Elections chairman Jose Melo said the poll body would come up with a resolution on the ban next week, saying that violence would be reduced with the gun ban in place. Only the bodyguards of candidates for mayor and higher positions could carry firearms, according to Melo. The Comelec allows only two security men in uniform for each candidate. No exemptions would be given to those who would argue that they are getting death threats, he said. But Melo said that the security escorts of President Gloria Arroyo and Vice President Noli De Castro would be exempted from the ban. On whether the ban would work or not, Melo said it had to start somewhere and asked candidates to heed the law when the election period starts. http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/insideNews.htm?f=2009/october/24/news9.isx&d=/2009/October/24

I personally don't own any guns but I agree with you about the foolishness of outlawing them. The crooks just ignore a ban. I saw a story on BBC yesterday that the Brits are going to arm their policemen in certain neighborhoods of London. It seems the drug gangs don't obey the gun control laws there and the police need weapons to deal with them. The good news about that policy change is it should stop some of the more sanctimonious Brits from carping about the US gun culture. It seems they're on the path of following suit.

The anti gun debate is all flawed IMO, but the main point I was trying to make with that post is that those in power will always make sure that they have guns to protect themselves and their friends, but they do not want those who wish to be in power or others who may also need to be protected, to have the means to protect themselves. I personally would give up my gun rights if there was a way to have a safe country without guns and that would mean that everyone would not have guns and not just those who control the rest of us being the only ones who have armed guards and all the firepower they feel that they need but do not feel that others need. As the world becomes more and more violent for whatever reasons it is happening, then more and more people will need to be able to protect themselves and while guns may not be the answer, I sure do not know what else will work when the bad guys have, and can always get, all the guns they want.

Gun laws don't apply to criminals. Why restrict honest citizens from owning or carrying firearms?.

Sanctimonious brits...who moi lolBritish police have laws had armed elements and they are more than welcomed when it comes to dealing with the low life scum that BBC documentary highlighted. a world apart from general arming of a police force that us sanctimonious brits do not approve of.Just got back from Singapore and asked my good lady what she thought of all those armed security guards on the malls, shops, banks and bars. She stopped looked at me and said I did not see any!!, correct they do not exist. Equally not one armed police officer in sight either. Looks like sanctimonious Brits are going to go the way of sanctimonious Singaporeans lol So this sanctimonious Brit is going to continue to carp about US gun culture as long as your high school kids get gunned down for attending school . The Hungerford and Dunblane shootings got us to outlaw hand guns, never been a repeat of any such actions since. then again that is just being sanctimonious. One thing this sanctimonious Brit would like to see is the restoration of the death penalty for those who kill police officers . There, not quite so sanctimonious anymore lol

OK all, we are not talking about the US or UK here and we are talking about a gun ban in the Philippines on everyone that would probably only be enforced on non elite candidates. There is always more then one issue related to guns and it was not my intention to get back into gun bans on average citizens with this thread but it seems some people like to continually to go off on the tangent of kids in schools being killed and this article is about taking guns from everyone including the body guards of political candidates and I am not quite sure how many body guards of political candidates have killed school children but I think I can safely guess that none have and it should be a pretty safe bet. I personally think this type of gun ban is a smoke screen to leave the people that the elite do not want to get elected without the ability to protect themselves. I hope that other governments will see what is going on and see through the smoke screen and put pressure on so that the people can elect who they want and not just who the elite want to get elected. Now, as for guns, I think comparing a country like Singapore to the Philippines is like comparing apples and oranges and again talking about guns is a multiple sided issue and IMO a country that does not trust its law enforcement people enough to allow them to be able to protect themselves and the people they are mandated to protect, is foolish. I guess maybe those who do not believe in guns should also disarm their military and try to use diplomacy with all the crazies of the world. I am not sure when people will wake up and realize that disturbed, crazy or radical people cannot be negotiated with and taking guns or anything else away from the good people because of some bad people is not living in freedom. I wonder when the day will come that they start to take alcohol or cars away from everyone because some drivers get drunk and kill with their cars? and to those who say they do it unintentionally, people who drink do so intentionally and should not drive when drunk and there should be no exceptions because eventually they will hurt themselves or someone else. I personally think the day of reckoning will be coming for those anti gun countries and when and if the radical people decide to take over, then all the anti gun people can try to reason with them but I fear reasoning will not work. Some people seem to take being anti gun to an extreme, if you are anti gun against the average person owning a gun that is one thing but being anti gun against anyone including those whose job it is to protect you is foolish IMO, unless of course you can find a way to make sure that bad people and the elite no longer have guns either and then and only then I too would be willing to give up my guns too.
