Coming in on that topic, weren't the chinese going to start with some programmes to improve the rail system in the Philippines, or was that all just propaganda to get their foot in the door.

A few years back when I was working in West Africa the Chinese went into Equatorial Guinea in a big way wanting their oil, and promised to improve things there, which to their credit they did building housing projects, schools and hospitals on a big scale, get this though they brought in convicts from mainland china to do the work and you guessed it for free.

There was an occasion when I was there that the labourers complaining about their conditions, they were taken out the back and shot, I don't reckon there were too many complaints after that.

It was the porter who assumed we were business class passengers and said so to the security guard.  My failure was not correcting him.  In recalling the sequence, we used the hotel limo service.  Seeing the car and uniformed driver may have influenced his belief about our status.  He might have also seen how much I tipped the driver.
