Yes, Gary nailed it.  I was not understanding how he could enter with just a passport.  They will always have something to let you in.

You have until Dec. 2019 to decide on some options:

A.  Leave the country with him and return together again, in which case they will give you BB for another year.

B.  Convert to tourist visa

C.  Convert to marriage visa

Is it specified how long you need to be out of the country, before you can enter again on Balikbayan visa??

Yes, and no.  You can find it specified on the BI website but whay you cannot see is the internal memo floating around that tell the immigration officials not to enforce a time limit out of the country.  I have seen it but cannot find it anymore.  You pays your money and you takes your chances but you can talk to dozens of expats who are here, with their wives, on a BB.  Many will tell you how they take a vacation out of the country once a year and come back with a fresh BB stamp in their passport.

Otherwise we will then get the Marriage Visa. :)

A marriage visa wouldn't work for you if you are just visiting every 2 or 3 years. You are visiting and not staying permanently from your posts.

I am so relieved. Thank you, kind sirs.

We usually visit every 2-3 years and this is the first time we've stayed this long. Can we keep doing this every time we visit the Philippines? (Until of course they change the law.) Otherwise we will then get the Marriage Visa. :)

Yes, that is fine.  As someone else mentioned, some expats use this every year to remain on a "permanent" basis.

As JGF said, marriage visa is a permanent resident visa and probably does not work well for you now.  It costs quite a bit to get and then every time you leave the country you have to pay a bunch of fees.  Balikbayan if your best deal.
