Popular Post BrettGC Posted February 1, 2020 Popular Post Posted February 1, 2020 (edited) Well we're finally all set: Certificate of No Impedance: Check CENOMARs for both of us: Check Birth Certificates: Check Copy of pg 3 and entry stamp of my passport: Check Death Certificate of her ex: Check Marriage Licence questionnaire and following 4 hours of mandatory pre-marriage counselling (don't get me started): Check All documents signed off by the city registrar: Check... No wait. Hold on! Miss, you have your residence as outside of Dumaguete, I'm sorry, we can't issue the licence here. You have to go back to your home town or prove residence here. Now this was on oversight by AM, she'd accidentally listed her home town on one of the documents, completely understandable given the stress and frustration of the previous few days. When we asked if there is anything we could do about it, the city registrar, a lovely lady who was very helpful I might add, said we'd have to go and see the Barangay Captain of Piapi as that's where AM resided when she was still working in Dumaguete, she'd only recently moved home again. So off we go, full of trepidation, to Piapi to see said official. When we entered his office we were greeted with a huge smile and "How can I help you?". We explained the situation and he just started filling out the Certificate of Residence no questions asked. Had the usual conversation about how AM and I had met, where I was from etc and it turns out Charlemagne Bantillan, Barangay Captain of Piapi is a thoroughly pleasant and decent sort of bloke that's a pleasure to have a chat with. We left a 100PHP donation and went back to City Hall and it's sorted now. Anyway that's the final step complete, just waiting for the licence processing and the raffle to see which judge at the Hall of Justice - I kept waiting for Judge Dredd to show his face for anyone that remembers the comics - is going to marry us. Forum Support Tommy T. Posted February 1, 2020 Forum Support Posted February 1, 2020 I am really pleased to see the wonderful experience you had with the barangay captain. L and I plan to go to the barangay where the new house is being constructed when it is completed. We want to introduce ourselves, give them some sort of donation because we see they are cleaning the road toward our home - cutting down and burning the tall grasses and weeds along the way and clearing the drainage ditches. We hope the captain there is as cool as the one you dealt with recently. You are giving us hope!

There does seem to be a bit of a groundswell of anti-expat feeling around sometimes but Charlie in Piapi is definitely not in that camp. I actually asked him his opinion and he said he appreciates what expats bring to the economy whilst some Filipinos can't see the wood for the trees (his words). He also said with the huge numbers in his Barangay he's never come across any real issues and finds most of them responsible and respectful residents, the number of problematic expats is on a par percentage-wise with Filipinos of the same stripe i.e. serial whingers, arguing with neighbours, or in general just making pests of themselves. So a dick is a dick no matter what their origin is the impression he gave me.
