KNOCK -  KNOCK  -   KNOCK !

Good possibility that this forum will see a new surge in membership.

Ships facing stormy seas, seek safe harbors.  There are many, many overseas Filipinas,  married to older Western husbands,  that this pending global economic crisis and resultant recession will now force to  seriously consider  doing a 'balikbayan'.  That's a return to town or country, for those husbands who have never had to consider such a possibility.  Or have kept it as a remote 'Plan D' in the back of their mind.

The reason I mention it now is due to a message and then a long phone call I had with an old (think 70+) high school classmate today.

Although he has been to the PI four times over the last seven years, I had never thought he would seriously ever consider such a move.   But his current business future, coupled with what just happened to his stocks has him quite unsettled and ready to consider a residence displacement.  And his younger wife is on board. I am sure he is not a rare case.

After answering some of his many queries,  I strongly advised his to either join this forum or make use of it,  since his knowledge and information needs are manifold.

Usually we have members who casually research such a move in their free time over the course of a few years, before making such an important life-altering decision.  But right now, many no longer can afford that luxury and feel pressed by the real  time threats to their continued status quo.

I'm sure there will be more of my local state-side asawas who may now consider more than an occasional visit here with their Filipinas, changing or scrapping their home, in-country retirement plans.

Let us know if you personally experience any and you feel that a surge may be coming.... if you'd care to write about it. Since I'll be stuck here for another three months, I would like something of interest to read. Ha-ha.

They may well wish to, but in the light of the recent visa curtailments it may become more difficult.

I'd like to think in times like this a lot of people will re-examine their lives.  Maybe it's cost of living, maybe it's just wanting to live more low-key, maybe it's wanting to be closer to the land, etc.  As I've said in other threads, there is a lot to like about Philippines, as much we enjoy bitching about it:whistling:

Until Tom arranges a cruise to Patagonia, this is where I'll stay.  I've encouraged several men my age from back home to explore their options.  Maybe some are adventurous enough to opt for greener pastures.  One of the goals we have here is to eventually live on a sustainable farm with room for and extra 8-10 people, should family or friends ever need a place to escape to.  Still working on that:grouphugg:

Was there a member from here doing this or already had a place with so many people sharing the land and produce, or did I dream it.

With the greatest respect for the NHS staff  and respect to Bastonjock, also thoses who work in the food supply chain

who are keeping the country going in this time of crisis.

I feel that the years of Austerity in UK, have left the NHS depleted of equipment and severe staff shortages.

We have over the years relied on our European connections for staffing hospitals and service industries here in UK.

I have said in the past, that if we ever lose the NHS to private  care, I would really consider a permenent move aboard.

Having seen the way some Asian Countries have handled this Pandemic with such proficency, makes me wonder just what

our Politicians have been doing these last ten years and more importantly in the last six to eight weeks!

I continue to try to do my bit, only venturing out to take my wife to work and try to shop early when necessary to avoid crowded shops.

I'm not attending any meetings or visiting family or friends, but checking they remain safe and well by phone.

I am seriously considering a move once this Pandemic is over, if by Gods grace I come through it. Stay Safe.:tiphat:

Is not balikbayans with spouses still allowed to enter, or did I miss something? :89:

And yet, returning to Canada has opened my eyes to the many repats who retired early and tried Philippines, Mexico, Costa Rica etc and came back to Canada at age 65 ish because those countries just do not compare to where we are now.

So perhaps some have explored the Philippines option and it has been weighed, it has been measured, and it has been found wanting.
