manofthecoldland Posted May 11, 2020 Posted May 11, 2020 I always wonder if I could save much money if we didn't have 2 dogs to support. Even though we feed them pretty cheaply and get free vaccinations every year..... Some friends keep more than one or two and feed them premium food but their budgets cover it OK. But I do know fellows who were hit hard by their home country pension currency devaluations in the last few years and really have to keep an eye on all costs. So do you think that keeping a dog or two here adds very much to your monthly budget?

We keep 4, Average costs are about 2.500 pesos a month ( vets bills on Top) we feed Liver and /or Small Market bought Fish, added to which we mix with Dry Dog food and rice ( easily Digested it seems) once or twice a week we fed the Dry Dog Food only Beef based usually and try to stay away from Corn Based products, all four get what ever shots they need yearly + the Free worming and rabies shots, So far this year we have lost some puppies and put that down to local infestations so we keep them in. It may seem a lot in cost terms but ours are more like Family with a job to do, they do it well and we put this down to the trust we give to them that they give back to us. We try never to give them our leftovers in quantity, Animals (especially some breeds of Dogs) are scavengers so we try and keep the Yards clear of what they might feel like scavenging . To keep them in trim daily they all get a pre-dinner treat of Good Pork or beef Chicharon ( this gives their coats a nice gleam) I don't think a solitary Dog is particularly good Idea, they too like their own company. Good luck with this 8
expatuk2014 Posted May 11, 2020 Posted May 11, 2020 We have 3 dogs the sister has the Oldest named Whitney, we have the daughter named Amaya and the daughters son originally named Gizmo due to the white fur on his head but he grew and grew and is now named Arnie !! he is now mummys Baby ! we feed them twice a day ,chicken liver and rice and varied with pork bits. we also buy them Biscuits for there afternoon treats and also pedigree chewsticks for their saturday treat and after they have been bathed. overall a months bill for the dogs inc food treats shampoos etc costs around 3000 pesos. we dont have children and the dogs protect us etc money well spent. I can understand others not being able to have dogs because of the cost etc, we love our dogs, they are not tied up or caged etc they have the run of the homes and the area. 3
Forum Support Old55 Posted May 11, 2020 Forum Support Posted May 11, 2020 Jack is the truly knowledgeable forum member to do with dogs here. I agree with him dogs are part of our family. Many years ago my family had a German Shepard that we all loved. He was well cared for fed fish and some rice but got heart worm and passed. Quality food will cost money. I remember buying ProPlan bagged food in Cebu City it was priced about 30% more than in US.
Forum Support Popular Post Mike J Posted May 11, 2020 Forum Support Popular Post Posted May 11, 2020 (edited) We have two smaller dogs, about 10-12 kilo each, and three cats. We feed mostly dry food plus meal leftovers for the dogs. We will give the cats fish or canned sardines a couple time a week. I would estimate food costs at about 1500 per month. Cost to spay the two female cats was 5,000 each, the male cat was neutered for free by the provincial government. They apparently stopped doing that about two years ago, at least doing it here anyway. Rabie shots are free and we buy the other misc shots from the agrivet and do the shots here at home. I don't recall the cost but it was quite reasonable, maybe 100 peso or so. So far no vet bills other than that spaying for the cats. But his love for dogs softens the fact that he doesn't know what he's talking about most of the time!
