For me it was easy, when i retired from the army as part of the process was listing my new HOR. When we sent that in it automatically changed it in all federal and state data bases. Same for my wife as she retired from the TSA.

Sounds like it's only for gov employees?

I just changed my address with the IRS a few months ago.  I changed it from the Philippines to my U.S. mailbox in Florida.

I have used my Philippines address for my tax return since 2013, and that has caused problems.  I had attempted ID theft several years ago.  Someone tried to file a tax return using my SS#.  So the IRS puts a lock on my SS# and requires me use a PIN to file my taxes.  They mail me the PIN in December.  If I am lucky, I get it late January.  Sometimes February.  So I get my taxes done in January, and then wait for the PIN before I can file.  Mail will take 2-8 weeks to get from the U.S., to the Philippines.

When you file your tax return, IRS records your address on it and that will be your address with the IRS.  So no need to use the form 8822, unless.....

COVID comes around and the government creates a big stimulus package.  $1200 per person, IF you reside in the U.S. and/or the IRS thinks you are.  So, I got shafted out of $1200 because I had been filing with my Philippines address.  As soon as I realized this, I filed form 8822, but it was too late.

Bottom line is, I no longer would recommend that an American citizen use their Philippines address for filing taxes.  It may come back to bite you.  I have now changed all my address to my mailbox in Florida.  If I would have done that last year, I would be $1200 richer right now.

If memory serves Florida does not have state income tax, where as California (my home state does) so I add about 6% (or more) to my monthly income.

I have not had any problems what so ever

So Shady, you now have two completely opposite experiences, you will need to do your due diligence and make an informed

Sorry Scott, not following you.  You said earlier:

"I don't know how things work in ole blighty, but for a Yank all I did was make my Home of Record address (actual government forms)  here in the phil with all relevant government agencies (for tax and vote purposes etc).

If the IRS had you as an overseas resident, you would not get the stimulus payment.  If you used your sister's address, you would get it.

"If memory serves Florida does not have state income tax, where as California (my home state does) so I add about 6% (or more) to my monthly income. "

What do you mean "add"?  If you are paying California income tax, you are losing.  Unless there is some other reason for leaving your address in California, you should move it.  Why throw away money?

What i meant was that when i changed my addy to the PI, i was no longer a resident of California, so i no longer pay state income taxes which is around 6% or so. So that is added to my income if you get my drift :SugarwareZ-005:

OK, but then I still don't understand how you got a stimulus payment.

Ah, I pay federal taxes, (get a refund usually) and my refund goes to my USA bank. My stimulus check went straight into it, and it was in the first batch too :nudie:

One of the idosyncrasies of this forum Wand, your question was probably answered (to the best of our ability) in the first few responses. But after 4 pages we do stray off topic at times :angry_80_anim_gif:
