Popular Post Queenie O. Posted January 18, 2021 Popular Post Posted January 18, 2021 If one has a small space that they can set aside in their yard, a compost pile is great to have. We put out fruit rinds all day and vegetable waste and grass leaf cuttings. You'd be surprised how quickly here in Cebu this waste can turn into dark compost soil that can be spread around. We've had ours quite a long time. Besides attracting many birds to the rinds, in just about a week the compost is already breaking down quickly. The pile is always flattening out quickly, and there are no odors. I think what works for one area of the Philippines might work differently for another though. I've started avocado and grapefruit trees that I grew from seed, and I think that now after about five years they might bear fruit. We also have two native guava trees that have pretty yellow fruit, with pink flesh and are very sweet. Not sure about other areas, but here in Cebu this is usually a balmy and dry time of the year. This year we've had rain almost every day, and some nights. Luckily the plants haven't suffered.
graham59 Posted January 18, 2021 Posted January 18, 2021 We have pretty distinct wet and (current)) dry seasons up here in Pangasinan. Oh, and here's a lovely new flower that appeared yesterday. The Mrs had been waiting for this one. It's about 4 inches across. (Don't ask me what it is ! lol). .

Oh, and I have cared for and cosseted that grass, believe me. Hopefully my lawnmower in England will soon be headed this way in a Balikbayan box too. :) (They are ridiculously expensive here). If it is you need to be careful as it is poisonous, especially seeds and flowers. From wkipedia Datura is a genus of nine species of poisonous vespertine flowering plants belonging to the family Solanaceae. They are commonly known as thornapples or jimsonweeds but are also known as devil's trumpets. Other English common names include moonflower, devil's weed and hell's bells.

Be very careful with casava as it is highly poisonous if not prepared correctly. https://www.seattletimes.com/nation-world/food-poisoning-kills-27-in-philippines-sickens-100-children-who-ate-cassava/
