For starters the price. Why bother with ivermectine?  Just because you can...maybe?

For starters the price.  Have read several positive studies, none of which have been peer reviewed.

One thing is certain Big Pharma will oppose any and all means to have it approved.

Big Pharma are selling it. They just realise it hasn't passed any credible tests and as such if they sanction it for use in Covid they could get a few expensive claims against them if it has serious side effects. I'm sure they'd be more than happy if governments took the risk.

Ivermectin is beyond its patent and can be obtained as a low cost generic. Big Pharma can not make much profit from drugs whose patent has run out. So if you are looking for profit motives, big pharma's incentive is to push for newer expensive drugs to be used for treatment rather than older low cost generic drugs out of patent whose side effects are well known.

Ignoring the 'does it work or not' for the moment I'd just like to say that there is a big difference between convincing your Doctor to prescribe you Ivermectin (which has happened of course) and going to an animal stock feed store and buying vet quality ivermectin and dosing yourself with it.

The latter has happened... and honestly... don't, just don't.

If it was all down to cost you'd expect Governments to be buying the cheapest and most effective medicine out there.  If Invermectin worked there's no way the Governments would be tanking their economies just to keep big pharma happy. Different states in the US would be using it just to make the other look bad if a different party was in power and certainly in the UK the SNP in Scotland would love Invermectin to work so they could use it and show the Westminster Government up.

That aside the countries that are using it still have some of the highest death rates in the World. Some that were using it have now stopped using it officialy and going down the vaccine route.

My reply wasn't intended to be about Ivermectin but your reasoning.  In the US big pharma is very powerful. They spend a great deal of money advertising on all the major networks which of course influences their coverage, big pharma is one of the largest spenders on lobbying the politicians, and finally there is a revolving door between high level positions in big pharma and federal agencies like the CDC and FDA.

And many countries unofficially follow the lead of the U.S.

Which countries?  Didn't India start using it?  They were in bad shape back in May and now doing much better.  I could be wrong, but I don't think anyone suggested that Ivermectin would replace vaccines, but perhaps it could slow the cases.

My understanding was that in order for the vaccines to get an emergency use authorizations from the FDA it was dependent on there not being any safe and effective treatment. One more reason for those who profit from big pharma to discourage testing and research of off label treatment using low cost generic drugs.

Another thing is that there are many things you can do to boost your immune system, Vit C, Vit D3, quercetin with zinc, excercise, diet, etc. The major media in the US never mentioned anything about what you could do to boost your immune system or improve your health to help you fight off COVID-19.

A well written, common sense,  and simple answer as to why not to rely on ivermectin.   Unfortunately it probably would not change the mind of those who's mind is already made up.  The whole ivermectin dustup sounds remarkably like the hydroxychloroquine fiasco.   The US now owns 63 million doses of hydroxychloroquine, most of which will probably end up getting tossed out unless they get donated to a country with malaria problems.
