How would that help though - surely existing SIM cards currently in use at the time of becoming law will also need to be registered i.e. not only when purchasing a new one? I've been using the same SIM for 2+ years and I assume if and when the law comes into force I'll have to register it.

In theory that will probably be the case but in practice how long would it take the authorities to register every existing SIM card? Realistically I can't see that happening any time soon... Maybe they could require the telcos to phase out the old unregistered SIM cards and people have to get new ones? (ie the old one can't be topped up anymore)

(ie the old one can't be topped up anymore) I just assumed, probably wrong, that the agency collecting the data would then notify the teleco provider that the sim has been "registered". The teleco would, by law, be required to disable service to those sims not registered after the six month deadline. At least that is how I would do it, but no in the Philippine government ever asked for my opinion. I suppose we could be looking to a future FUBAR.

Registered by who though. The owner? A relative? A fixer? And are sari sari stores qualified to determine if an ID is valid or fake? Not exactly a foolproof plan, seems like it's more for appearance.
hk blues Posted September 30, 2022 Posted September 30, 2022 Like everything, and not just here, you have to start somewhere and lots of details will need to evolve. Probably a starting point would be to ensure all new SIMs are registered and then next the already existing SIMs. Of course, we will likely never get to the "next" group! Actually, we will likely never get to the starting point in reality!
Paul877 Posted May 28 Posted May 28 If I'm in the Philippines on a Balikbayan, am I able to avoid the 30 day activation period?

No need to buy a special SIM for the Philippines. This is a good question. Will you even be able to register a SIM from a carrier not licensed in the Philippines? My phone also works worldwide with the SIM that was supplied by T_Mobile. Worked the last time in the Philippines with no issues. We plan a 1-3 month visit 2025. I'm thinking it's not necessary but since they would have no control of business outside the country.

I also have a T-mobile sim that I keep loaded in an older iPhone and keep my account in the USA open. You don’t need to register it in the Phils. Over the past 2 years I’ve used it on numerous occasions without any issues to both receive 2FA texts and to make calls back to the USA. Typically it roams on the Globe network. Its also worked well in Thailand, Korea, Japan and Hong Kong. The 5gb’s of data per month was more than enough for checking emails, using google maps and sending messages on wastebook and WhatsApp. I would recommend only turning on cell data when needed and keeping your phone in airplane mode when you don’t need it. Otherwise T-mobile might think you’re now living out of the USA and they will cut your service. Edited May 28 by Gator
intrepid Posted May 28 Posted May 28 Thanks Gator. That is what I was thinking and hoping. Good to know. My plan is unlimited worldwide except phone calls. Have used in many countries in Asia and Europe with no added fees. Thanks again.
