longway Posted October 5, 2022 Posted October 5, 2022 I have been wondering why there are no sport fishing charter boats available (to my knowledge) or even bottom fishing which is fun too. Surrounded by beautiful water and many commercial fishers but no sport fishing opportunities for tourists and locals? Affecianadoes travel the world for a chance to fish in beautiful places. Maybe there are no sport fish (marlin, grouper, snapper, ect) in these waters. Any fishermen here?
Forum Support Old55 Posted October 5, 2022 Forum Support Posted October 5, 2022 This question comes up occasionally. Sport fishing as known in the States doesn't exist in Philippines. Someone reported awhile back that he knew of a sports fishing charter some place out of Luzon I think it was? Have you done a google? We must remember if there were an easy available fishery the locals would immediately fish it out. I'm not saying this to disrespect Filipinos its simply a mater of food on the table. Most assessable fishing areas are over harvested and depleted but fisher folk still find a way to put enough fish on the table to eat and a bit for the market. You have to respect them for that. You could hire a small fishing boat and fisherman to take you out for the day no problem. They use nets or something like what we know of as a Long Line.

There are a lot of yachts for hire is you want the expensive options, but I'm not sure if many specialize in fishing charters. Most specialize in the "3 hour sunset cruise" like Gilligan's Island. I suppose some will have equipment. I see rod holders on some. When you return, it will be at the yacht club, so no hassles with locals wanting the fish. For the cheaper options, you can hire a banca like this outfit: https://www.facebook.com/jepoycharifa Probably no issues with keeping fish there too, but you could give a lot away. In any case, I would not eat any fish caught in the bay. A lot of pollution. At least go to the mouth on the backside of Grande Island. Not dried like normally found but nice baked filets of mahi mahi, sea trout, or similiar. I guess I am spoiled.
Heeb Posted October 6, 2022 Posted October 6, 2022 (edited) I have a banka here in Zambales but I’ve only been fishing twice before rainy season, once bottom fishing and once trolling with squid lures. The bottom fishing was a waste of time but I did catch 4 yellowfin trolling, not large ones mind you. I watch the local fisherman come in with a pair of binoculars from my roof deck, if I see anything interesting I will head down sometimes and barter. I’ve had some very large Mahi and wahoo, yellowfin is plentiful and I have a local gal that stops by on bicycle with a cart that delivers fresh fish. Before I go trolling again I want to get a motor with a starter, I’m not a fan of the wrapping a rope around a pulley method. My brother in-law is headed out tomorrow morning with a net at my wife’s orders, they spent all day trying to get it started since it’s been idle all rainy season. Net fishing takes the sport out of it for me. I had an electric motor on order from Amazon for my kayak but it never showed so I just took a refund. I might try shipping cart next time. I’m 6’4” to give you a reference how big that mahi was. Edited October 6, 2022 by Heeb 2
