Forum Support Popular Post Mike J Posted May 5, 2023 Forum Support Popular Post Posted May 5, 2023 My wife and I both drive here. I get very nervous when she drives because, like many Filipino drivers, she fails to maintain her lane even though she learned to drive in the US. She get very nervous when I drive because I maintain my lane and she is afraid I will go "off the road". 1

I've observed a few drivers here, and I swear they genuinely believe the middle line is supposed to line up with the middle of their car!

Keep that under your hat or the Jeepney Mafia will go on strike. For some reason they are proud of being Jeepney drivers. 1

Unless you're getting long bonnet, jeep 'styled', sealed and AC equipped ones out of an existing Jeepney maker? You can Call them what you like but that's what it is now, like it or lump it. Modern Jeepneys is the term used everywhere here.
Lee Posted May 18, 2023 Posted May 18, 2023 Kinda rolled up on this accident today while driving in town. I suspect that the driver is probably not from around here.
Popular Post Joe LP Posted May 18, 2023 Popular Post Posted May 18, 2023 Read a lot of great ideas in this thread. I bought my Honda Odyssey about 6 years ago. I drove it for about a year, and taught the wife the whole time. She got good enough and started driving it a lot. Then an American friend of mine got in an accident on his motorbike and was taken to the local doctor hospital. While there, some locals in another accident came in and then started to accuse our friend of being the cause their accident and were looking for him to pay all the bills. His local wife was there already and ran home to get all the insurance paperwork and other legal ID's, etc for him. She came back as the police were involved now. The whole thing blew up in the accusers face when they were asked where their accident happened. It happened 2 municipalities away from where our friend's accident happened and it was a truck, not a motorbike involved. After that, I rarely get to drive. Almost always a pinoy driver in the van when I am in it, be it my wife or one of her cousins. LOL. She does it to protect me, I get it. But, insurance, dash cams, and, if you can get one for cheap, a local driver are all good ideas if you plan on staying here long term.

Something similar happened here locally. A long time, well known American pastor was driving down one of the main streets here in town. Up ahead he witnessed an accident involving a car and a motorcycle. The driver of the car was at fault and the motorcyclist was banged up pretty good. He pulls up behind the accident and watches for a bit. Seeing a lull in the action, he walks up to the motorcyclist and hands him his business card. He tells him that he saw the whole thing and can testify as such. A few days later, metro police show up at the pastors door to arrest him for leaving the scene of an accident. The two drivers in the accident had conspired to shift the blame for the accident onto the American----no doubt because they felt the payday might turn out to be a little better. The case ended up in courts with the American eventually dying of Covid. This incident always impressed upon me that the best course is for ex-pats to NEVER get involved in situations like this as the results will often end poorly. The pastor later admitted that the best thing that he could have done that fateful day would have been to turn his car around and drive back the way he had just come. 1 1

Damn, good advice but for many of us hard to do. I'll remember that if I'm ever put in that position.
