manofthecoldland Posted May 30, 2023 Posted May 30, 2023 I always assumed that flashing your lights to another was an alert to unexpected danger or upcoming situations ahead that call for caution/attention. I still do it now, as a safety warning and courtesy to oncoming traffic on my rural road while going into town, when I pass a recent situation on the 2 lane highway like a breakdown recovery truck, a moose near the road, a gaggle of bicyclists up ahead around the curve, etc. When there are power failures and traffic intersection lights are out, I find that people are very cautious and do indeed follow the arrival and departure pecking order very well in those emergencies. I think it has as much to do with fear of damage to life and more likely their expensive vehicles with attendant insurance rate increases, than consideration to other anonymous drivers.... just call me a cynic and misanthrope on that call, and I won't mind.
Possum Posted May 30, 2023 Posted May 30, 2023 Where we live flashing your lights means I am going in front of you. Flashing lights has no legal standing but what do you expect in a country where you have to look both ways when turning on to a one way street. 3
Popular Post Hestecrefter Posted May 30, 2023 Popular Post Posted May 30, 2023 In places I have lived in Canada and U.S., oncoming vehicles flashing lights several or more times as they approach you means: "Warning! Radar trap ahead."
Forum Support Old55 Posted May 30, 2023 Forum Support Posted May 30, 2023 I'll share my experiences here in the US now that we have gone totally off topic as usual. Flashing lights in the US means; 1) Okay to pull in front of me now that you've safely passed. 2) Flashing lights to on coming traffic means beware of a radar trap ahead of you. 3) Angry people without a gun permit with numerous felony warrants will start shooting shortly.

I have to look both ways when backing out of my driveway----often there is a motorcycle/pedicab going south in the north bound lane right in my blind spot when backing out. 1

People driving cars don't think of or know about it. I drove trucks in my youth and it was regarded as a courtesy to be able to look in your side mirror to see a flash to let you know your truck and/or trailer had cleared the truck behind. Now, even when I drive a car, I know that if a large truck passes me, the driver with still appreciate knowing he's clear. Especially if on a highway with 2-way traffic and there is usually no time to waste in pulling back to the right. The "flash" is usually held until the leading truck starts to pull over, so then the "flasher" (no, not that kind), knows the flash has been seen. Protocol usually expects the "flashee" to acknowledge the "flasher's" courtesy by giving the left turn indicator a couple of flashes.

Flashing lights from an oncoming vehicle means; "I am in your lane, now it's mine, so you better to slow the f*** down". Seems to happen most with buses and larger vehicles like SUVs and big pickups. This happens frequently on the Cebu national highway, most of which is still only two lanes, one in each direction, with little or no shoulder. Scary stuff even by Philippine standards. Interesting, here in Bacolod if lights are flashing means the flasher (excuse the pun) is going ahead and heaven help anyone whom tries to stop me. Almost always relates to a large SUV
Heeb Posted May 31, 2023 Posted May 31, 2023 I don’t like the flashing emergency lights when parking, it gives you know indication of the intention of the driver, it’s a catch all. Is this a thing in other countries that I’m not aware of?
Possum Posted May 31, 2023 Posted May 31, 2023 IMHO Filipinos are among the most uneducated, undisciplined drivers in the world. The reasons are many fold. The driving test is a joke for those that even bother to get a license. Traffic laws are almost never enforced outside the major population centers. Not much to do about it as this will not change unless there is a national effort to enforce the law and that will not happen because the politicians do not want to alienate the voting public. If a politician is judged to be anti-poor by enforcing the law they may not be reelected and being a politician in here is a way to great riches. 2
