Lee Posted October 3, 2023 Posted October 3, 2023 Quote MANILA, Philippines — A criminal complaint is being readied against a teacher in Antipolo City after a Grade 5 student, whom she allegedly slapped, died in a hospital due to brain hemorrhage. Antipolo police chief Lt. Col. Ryan Manongdo said Mirasol Sison of the Peñafrancia Spring Valley Elementary School faces a complaint of homicide in relation to Republic Act 7610 or the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act. “We are just waiting for the medico-legal and autopsy report from the hospital,” Manongdo said in an interview aired over GMA News. An investigation report said Sison slapped the student, Francis Jay Gumikib, 14, on Sept. 20 at around 9 a.m. The mother of the victim, Elena Minggoy, said the teacher scolded her son after he complained about his noisy classmate. The boy told his mother that his teacher pulled his hair then slapped him. Minggoy said her son complained of a headache when he arrived from school. The boy said he also felt dizzy and pain in the ear. The boy was still able to attend classes for three days after the incident. On Sept. 26, he was brought to the Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center in Marikina City when his condition worsened. He went into a coma and died on Monday at around 10:21 a.m. Sison denied that she was responsible for the boy’s death, according to Executive M/Sgt. Divina Rafael, who heads the Antipolo police station’s women and children desk. Rafael said Sison claimed that she only ”patted” the boy’s face. The Department of Education said a team was created to look into the case. Teacher faces raps as student dies after ‘slap’ (msn.com)
Lee Posted October 11, 2023 Author Posted October 11, 2023 Update. Quote Slap by teacher didn't kill 14-year-old, police say The alleged slap by his teacher didn't kill the 14-year-old Grade Five student in Antipolo City. According to a report on "24 Oras," the Antipolo police said a forensic expert already explained the finding to the loved ones of Francis Gumikib. The complaint for homicide filed against the teacher has been ruled out but a complaint for child abuse is being considered. The PNP Forensic Group earlier said a rare condition caused the student's brain to bleed. The autopsy and the histopathological examination done on Gumikib indicated that hemorrhage and swelling of the brain caused his death. Earlier in the day, a PNP-FG medicol legal officer said the rupture of the blood vessel in the brain of the student who was slapped by a teacher in Antipolo City was “non-traumatic in nature.” At a press briefing, the PNP-FG said that the cause of death was “intracerebral hemorrhage and edema.” (With regards to the layman’s terms of the cause of death, intracerebral, cerebral edema is the swelling of the brain and intracerebral hemorrhage is the bleeding in the brain.) (The cause of the intracerebral hemorrhage or the bleeding in the brain is the swelling of the brain and the cause of intracerebral hemorrhage is we are looking at, that is why we said that the rupture of that blood vessel is non-traumatic in nature, is mostly it is a rare condition.) Dela Cruz said it was the most common cause of intracerebral hemorrhage in the age group of the patient. Lee Posted October 12, 2023 Author Posted October 12, 2023 Who could blame the family for being skeptical. Please recall that the teacher initially denied slapping the kid. Slapped student's kin won't accept PNP findings on death Quote The family of Francis Gumikib, the Grade 5 student who died after being slapped by his teacher, cannot accept the findings that it was a rare condition that killed him. According to Jun Veneracion's report on "24 Oras," the medico-legal team of the PNP Forensic Group said Francis’ death was caused by the bleeding and swelling of his brain due to a rare congenital disease. Francis' father Eusebio said this was not possible as the victim had never been admitted to a hospital before he was slapped. It’s just the slap... Our son has never been hospitalized.) The police further added that if the slap was really the cause of death, the symptoms would have manifested within three days as opposed to Francis’ case where he was able to attend school and play basketball before falling ill five days after the incident. (“If what the teacher did really was that strong and impactful, he should have had external manifestations like bruises, wounds, or scratches. From the victim, there is none,”) (“This will be unpopular, but I cannot fathom, as the chief investigator, the filing of a homicide case,”) While the PNP said that the results have already been double-checked by a group of experts, the family is welcome to reconfirm the results with other agencies such as the NBI. Meanwhile, the teacher involved in the slapping may still face charges for alleged child abuse. The teacher has yet to release a statement, while the Department of Education chose not to comment on the autopsy results. The PNP-Forensic Group on Wednesday said that the rupture of the blood vessel in Francis' brain was “non-traumatic in nature." At a press briefing, the PNP-FG said that the cause of death was “intracerebral hemorrhage and edema.” (With regards to the layman’s terms of the cause of death, intracerebral, cerebral edema is the swelling of the brain and intracerebral hemorrhage is the bleeding in the brain.) Dela Cruz said it was the most common cause of intracerebral hemorrhage in the age group of the patient. (At first, the patient is symptomatic and suddenly they will become ill. These blood vessels are fragile and they can rupture spontaneously. In other cases, there is tension on that particular anomaly in the brain.) —Jiselle Casucian/NB, GMA Integrated News Slapped student's kin won't accept PNP findings on death (msn.com)

Categorically wrong. From the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke: Quote Some injuries are considered primary, meaning the damage is immediate. Other outcomes of TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) can be secondary, meaning they can occur gradually over the course of hours, days, or appear weeks later. These secondary brain injuries are the result of reactive processes that occur after the initial head trauma.7 Feb 2023 https://www.ninds.nih.gov/health-information/disorders/traumatic-brain-injury-tbi 1 hour ago, Lee said: “If what the teacher did really was that strong and impactful, he should have had external manifestations like bruises, wounds, or scratches. hk blues Posted October 13, 2023 Posted October 13, 2023 Regardless, I hope the teacher concerned still faces some form of punishment for the initial slap. The original "crime' shouldn't be allowed to go under the radar.
