BrettGC Posted October 10, 2023 Posted October 10, 2023 Our local vet works with the local city authorities on her days off and they offer weekly free rabies vaccinations for dogs. I asked her if there were many takers to which she stated "one in 5 years". Either way, that doesn't solve the stray issue. They also periodically offer free spaying/neutering but they've never had a taker probably due to them not providing free post-op pain relief etc in addition to the general lack of education of the benefits. In her surgery she charges 3k PHP for males, 5k for females but that includes the post-op pain relief, "bucket" to stop them licking the wound and follow up visits. The price goes up if the dog is an adult.

As they say, watch this space, we only just had them vaccinated in a fortnight the spaying. The price is better than what was quoted earlier 15+ k and it is done at our home. Every 4-5 weeks they have a spay and neuter clinic and will spay/neuter 10-20 dogs.. The fee for a "breed" dog is about 2500 peso, that fee is sufficient to provide an additional spay or neuter for a stray or Aspin from low income Filipino. Their program has "fixed" approximately 300 local dogs since they started. It has been so successful that a number of local Moalboal business owners (restaurants, resorts, restobar, dive shots, etc.) have pledged to make monthly donations and the number of dogs being spay/neutered is increasing each month. They also recently began doing weekly free rabies clinics. Amazing ladies with a program that is truly helping the community. DAS is run by a Brit so it's modelled on the western type pound system.
Forum Support Popular Post Mike J Posted October 12, 2023 Forum Support Popular Post Posted October 12, 2023 In my earlier post I stated that the Moalboal group has spay/neutered approximately 300 dogs. Turns out it is over 500 dogs in two years. Below is a message on their Facebook page. <snip>Yesterday we were honoured to welcome Doc Gel from Dumaguete Animal Sanctuary to our team for the day. Doc Gel is the shelters new full-time vet and wanted to enhance her existing spay and neuter skills and experience. Although she is experienced in this field, she wanted to learn more about the flank method of spaying females. Who better to learn from than our amazing Doc Reive of Aballe Veterinary Care, who has taken spay and neuter experience and competence to a completely new level. With fixing over 500 dogs for us over the last 2 years, he is also offering low cost spay and neuter on a weekly basis with partners around south Cebu. Doc Gel we hope your time with us was productive and you had some fun! It was our pleasure to work with you and we hope to see you again very soon.<end snip>

hk blues Posted August 6 Posted August 6 My wife went for a rabies injection today. The last time she went it was with our son and it was free. Today she had to pay 300php (would have been 600php but she shared) - given Philhealth has an excess of 500million php it's a disgrace they are not providing rabies injections free. Bear in mind she will need to pay this 4 times so 1,200php - a not inconsiderable sum of money for many here. Another example of how the powers that be really don't care for the population here. 1
Forum Support Tommy T. Posted August 6 Forum Support Posted August 6 That is a topic that worries me greatly. Everyone around our home has dogs and cats and I saw two hug rats running on the roof of our garden house two days ago. We all know that virtually no one inoculates their "pets." That costs money, much more than the cost of the rice they feed them all. We keep our mutts up to date on all meds, including worming and flea and tick and annual rabies vacs. So we just worry about all the others in the neighbourhood. That is yet another issue that I believe the "government" might address here?
graham59 Posted August 6 Posted August 6 90% of the mangy mutts in this country could do with being shot. Useless, disease-ridden noisy nuisances... and the dogs are almost as bad. 1
