The fact is expats are a forgotten bunch. The attitude in the US is if you voluntarily leave, eff you. Don't expect any help if you get in trouble, don't expect benes. There are no pols advocating for expats. Here's one example. He was finally allowed to leave after paying all the immigration fees and penalties accrued while he was in prison for 5 years.
