I notice the article doesn’t mention the driver by name. Perhaps another article does. Might help to catch him if they publicly identified the guy and posted his pic.

I wonder if they are taking this so seriously because it became a hot topic or because they take it so seriously?

Hot topic.

I have complained in writing as well by phone and never got a response.

2,000 I can understand, but 10,000?  It's just asking for trouble IMO.

As long as you guys bend over, they will continue to take the piss more and more.

Stop your western thinking.

Think in centavos, not pesos, never mind dollars.

I never casually give a 3 peso tip to a taxi driver becauuse I know that is 10 minutes work to alot of people.

We bring it on ourselves otherwise.

Especially you yanks.  Quit it now.

You are wrong on so many points in your post.

1- I don't bend over. I merely stated that a certain level of gouging is the norm here in certain situations. I never said I accepted it. I have exited many a taxi for the sake of 50php attempt at gouging purely on principle.

2- I have lived here 8 years and have long since thought in local currency. 10 years in Hong Kong before coming here made that easy for me.

3- And best of all, I AM NOT AMERICAN.

In short my friend, think more carefully next time before you jump in with a two-footed tackle.

I'm not Joe. I'm Cheap Charlie the kuripot Kano. But I am of the opinion that you need to grow some as a human if you won't tip a taxi driver 10% for a smooth ride. I've been known to give 30% if a long time was spent stuck in traffic.

Tip 10% to a taxi driver?

Many people here do assembly job out work for 30 centavos per assembly.  That is alot of work to get just 50 pesos or so.

So my approach is,  why should a taxi driver, who already earns a good salary, easily receive money when the poorest do not?  It demeans the value of the money.  If you choose to give  you could aim more precisely, unless the giving is actually mainly a "feel good" factor for the ego of the donor.

I have been working with the poorest people here for 17 years.  Not an armchair commentator.  Fire away.
