Forum Support Popular Post Tommy T. Posted February 22 Forum Support Popular Post Posted February 22 About a week ago I finally ventured into our local S & R - I waited until well after the Christmas frenzy and also went on a week day. Turns out it was the day before Chinese New Year, so it was packed....hate that! Anyway, I happened across eye of round beef "roast" under the S & R brand. There were two small "roasts" in the package at a rate of P569/kg. Not cheap, but not unreasonable. So I took a chance and bought it. Way back in the day, my Dad used to always bbq London Broil as a steak. I learned many years ago that this is simply top round roast cut thick across the grain (we're talking 1.5" to 2" thick. So last night I sliced four 1-1.5" steaks out of one of the roasts and cooked it on the bbq. It was not as tender as others I have had here (which is only one or two other purchases) but they had great taste and really were not tough - a bit chewy, but not like at a true steakhouse found in many countries. It was good enough that next time I will slice it much thicker - a la London Broil - and marinate it a while in something that might tenderize it a bit. I was impressed enough to make this post and will definitely buy it again. S & R has great foreign meats from Oz, NZ, USA. This was one of the better experiences I have had with beef available here. Cheers, Beafeaters!
OnMyWay Posted February 22 Posted February 22 I think a lot of S&R brand beef is AU or NZ grass fed, which tends to be tougher than grain fed or grain finished. I'm not good with the grass fed. It always comes out tough. Needs a better cook than me. My latest favorites are tri-tips from Royal. Nice marbling, tender and good taste just cooking quickly in the pan.
Possum Posted February 22 Posted February 22 My wife bought me a wagyu A5 for Valentine's Day and a choice grade ribeye for herself at S&R. Both were excellent though not as thick as I like. However, once I found how much she paid for the wagyu I got slight indigestion. Her reasoning was it's cheaper than going to a steak house like Ruth Chris in BGC which we have done twice in our life. 1
