So I would say the primary cause is desperation for that are poor.  Greed for those who are well to do and willing to climb over others to further enrich themselves.

My opinions of course.

As with craftbeerlover, you are correct.

I remain surprised that others see it differently.

To a certain extent for me.   The wealthy the reason is obvious, however, I do see greed at all social classes.  What is driving this greed is open for debate, but it for sure is not as black and white as just greed or desperation.  Bottom line, greed is woven into the fabric here.  I have seen it tear families apart (not wealthy families), tandem motorcycle killings happen so often I am astounded, the list goes on.  As somebody else stated, the root causes are a laundry list, and then some.   Fear, no hope, inferiority complexes, education, self worth etc... OR just plain greed or desperation.  Its a fricken mess

Right - the idea that every action and person can be conveniently boxed into one or the other just doesn't ring true.  Some of the poorest will do something out of greed and some of the wealthiest out of desperation.

It's very complex.  Take the scenario of the kid who hasn't eaten all day and steals an apple from the market stall, then another.  Is the 1st act out of desperation and the 2nd greed?  On a simplistic basis, yes.  But isn't it fair to say the poor kid was simply getting what he could when he could as who knows what tomorrow will bring?

I have maybe invested more time in this topic than I should but simply reel against the idea that in a country where whole swathes of the population don't have enough to get by comfortably on a daily basis (for whatever reason) there are no acts of desperation, only greed.

I think it is a combination of both desperation and greed ( 'desperation' in specific social classes of course), but I do believe greed is just about in the DNA here, more than any place I have ever lived or experienced.   It is on a level that is shameful.  (SO THANKFUL that does no include my wife, but it does include her mother)   I've always felt the Philippines is a Sociologists wet dream

Add laziness to the reason for desperation.  So many people in the past came asking to borrow.  We started offering them work to help them in their situation.  Not one adult every took the offer.  After two years of searching for a house helper we gave up.  Each one wanted to be paid to stare at their phone.  I would rather give money to the guy going through the trash, getting plastic and metal to recycle than hand money to the lazy people.  Giving money to lazy people is just rewarding bad behavior and breeds more panhandlers.  Just my opinion.

After reading some of the horror stories you guys have about house help, I almost want to start going back to church.

We have had the members of the same extended family work for ours for close to 50 years. Starting with my Mother-in-law and her sister, to both my Brothers-in-law and now for us. It seems almost feudal. When one gets sick, married, pregnant or dies another relative appears. If you disregard some of them being dumber than a pile of rocks, I am hard pressed to think of any problems we have had.

I take it back though; we did have one problem awhile back. The teenage son of our head maid was doing odd jobs about the house and small change started disappearing. His mother was the one who noticed it, she smacked him upside the head, fired his ass, and through him out of her house.
