I like Bit Defender in lieu of Kapersky.  Around the same price and does all the same things.  Another option is Surf Shark firewall as it has a very well reviewed anti-virus included on one the the purchase tiers but still relatively cheap compared to other options.  I just avoid Norton; yes it's a great AV but it's also a major system hog particularly on older computers.

I have been using Malwarebytes for about a decade.  No issues so far and reasonable price.

Another highly rated AV.

Regarding 2FA. If possible use Authy or Google Authenticator instead of a phone number. Your phone number can be hijacked by the bad guys doing a simm swap. And if you use Google authenticator disable saving the auth data to the cloud.

Whilst I don't doubt the good sense in the advice at all, my banks don't accept this for 2FA (as far as I can see) - they insist on a phone number or, if you're lucky, email address.

If I decide to switch to Linux, will my data, cache, passwords, files still be saved and available? So many things I have on this laptop that I don't want to lose. Of course I have back-ups, but it is such a hassle to switch to new hardware or operating systems. I have some IT background, but not nearly as extensive as yours seems to be. But, with advancing age, these changes are more difficult for me to maneuver through and around.

I switched our conputers over to Ubuntu from Windose several years ago. It was relatively painless, and, in my opinion, worth it.

Linux can be installed along side Windose, and you can choose which OS to log into when you boot your computer or log off, etc.

All of the data files on Windose directories are accessible from Linux, as long as you are the admin.

Keep in mind that the software programmes that you are using on Windose will not, easily, operate on LInux.

Most of the Windose based software programmes do have their equivalents on Linux, it is just a matter of finding out which one(s) you prefer.

There are a lot of resources, forums, etc online to support potential and new Linux users, so in my opinion you should take some time going through them and then decide what you wish to do.

Useful info but I can't help wondering If Tommy was able to continue to use Windows alongside Linux then I don't see why he'd want to use Linux in the 1st place - the issue he has is not being able to use windows going forward without upgrading his hardware.

He can continue to use his version of windows, it just will not be supported by Microsoft.  Not a huge deal if you have adequate virus protection.

That's really my point - why would he go to the trouble of adding another OS when he could continue with his existing one anyway?
