Very strong mag. 6.8 Earthquake - Philippine Sea, 31 km east of Bislig City, Surigao del Sur, Caraga, Philippines, on Saturday, Aug 3, 2024, at 06:23 am (Manila time)

A very strong magnitude 6.8 earthquake occurred in the Philippine Sea near the coast of Caraga,  Philippines, in the early morning of Saturday, Aug 3, 2024 at 6.23 am local time (Asia/Manila GMT +8). The quake had a very shallow depth of 26 km (16 mi) and was felt over a large region. The shallow depth of the quake caused it to be felt more strongly near the epicenter than a deeper quake of similar magnitude would.
No significant damage or impact is expected from this quake and no particular alert was issued.

An earthquake of magnitude 7.0 occurred only 10 minutes ago 85 km east of Bislig City, Philippines, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 51.5 km beneath the epicenter near Bislig City, Surigao del Sur, Caraga, Philippines, early morning on Saturday, August 3rd, 2024, at 6:23 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 6.3 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Hinatuan (pop. 10,100) located 84 km from the epicenter, Bislig City (pop. 67,600) 85 km away, Baganga (pop. 10,100) 95 km away, and Monkayo (pop. 51,400) 124 km away.
In Magugpo Poblacion (pop. 233,300) located 168 km from the epicenter, and Mati (pop. 105,900) 174 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
