jimeve Posted August 4 Posted August 4 Looking for some advise about in-growing toe-nail. Been to the family Doc and she said I need to soak it in warm soapy salty water then peel the nail back until it comes out. She said take pain relievers and antibiotics which gave a prescription. Well, been doing what she said but pulling the nail is painful I managed to snip away the part that's ingrowing but there is a lot of fungi underneath. The Doc looks old school and have to go again to see her on Monday or Tuesday. Good she gave me a choice of days to visit. Heard of D.I.Y treatment but I hate pain. BTW It's a big toe and very tender.

I had toenail fungus and did not realize it until my big toe started hurting. I rubbed tolnaftate (generic of Tinactin) antifungal onto/into the top of the nail and under the nail every night for about two months on all my toe nails. A new nail grew out under the old one. It took about a year for the new toenail to completely grow out. In the meantime I kept trimming the old one as the new one pushed it out. This was about two years ago, so far the fungus has not come back. Mine were not ingrown but they looked kind of ugly and misshapen. The shape and color are now fine on all nails. 1

The antibiotics should take care of any infection.

But in addition every night before going to bed I also applied a liberal amount of Vicks Vapo-Rub to the nail and then covered it with an old 100% cotton sweat sock. Furthermore i also gave the inside of my shoes a short burst of Lysol, plus I kept a spray bottle with a 10% bleach solution in it and would spray the floor in my shower before and after each use.
Forum Support Tommy T. Posted August 4 Forum Support Posted August 4 For past infections of various kinds where soaking was suggested by the docs, they suggested - and I used - Joy detergent in a container with water as hot as I could stand it. It seemed to kill the infections and encouraged them to ooze out over time with a bit of gently coaxing by pressure from fingers. Of course, fungus is a different case which I know nothing about.
OnMyWay Posted August 4 Posted August 4 If you have a badly ingrown toe nail, see a podiatrist or possibly a dermatologist. My derma doc does toe work sometimes. He posts a lot of gross stuff on FB. He prides himself as a surgeon and I think cut off anything you like. Having a specialist fix it with local anesthesia is probably much quicker and less pain than DIY. And less chance of reoccurrences. My family and I have ugly toe syndrome and several family members have had surgery. I never wear shoes anymore so don't really have ingrown issues. When I was a runner my toes were constantly messed up. 1 hour ago, Gator said: Also had the same as you and did the same thing as @Mike J recommended. Is your witch doctor in Angeles? I heard that Lysol is also a good breath spray!

A couple of personal rules I follow. 1. I never stand up in bare feet in the dermatologist office, you never know what the last patient drug in. 2. When I travel I always spray the shower/tub floor with Lysol before using.
Clermont Posted August 4 Posted August 4 When I was in the navy we were encouraged to pee on our feet before having a shower, sounds gross but I don’t think I had any feet issues.

Same advice was given to army personnel in Vietnam.

I was banned from the local swimming baths for doing that!
