In the bad old days this was much more of an issue but with the increased installation of fiber internet it's much less common - in a typical year we maybe lose our connection once or twice and then for just a few minutes, a couple of hours at most. Losing electricity is much more common but with power banks and back-up batteries and/or generators that needn't be a problem.

The big problem they had with home sachooling in North America is that the children had very little social skills and did not know how to deal with others. I would try to ensure there is ample exposure to other children and other viewpoints than the one dictated by the parents which was in many cases questionable. Well crap, I dont even know if I can find the key to the bedroom she is locked up in. There is a doggie door for her food etc.... I think she is going to be just fine, I programed the Munsters and Adams family into the laptop, so at least she will have an understanding of the world outside.

Possum Posted August 9 Posted August 9 (edited) Home schooling is fine with the right program and of course socialization is important also. We were disappointed with the private school our daughters attended last year and considered home schooling again. My wife was concerned about the lack of social activity so I told her to check with the school and see how much they charged just for recess, we could just take them there for that. She didn't comment. Luckily we found a school that appears to be better but home schooling will always be an option and we continue with their online lessons. There are tradeoffs but one can go to extremes. My cousins both were pretty well off but John sent his child to a public school in a good district, went to a good university and took over John's oil and gas business, deals with roughnecks and roustabouts every week.. John's sister Jane, who is married to one of those Silicon Valley multimillionaire, went the other direction. Sending her kids to the most expensive schools around even if it meant they had to pay for a new wing for the school to get them in. They have had their education spoon fed to them all the way thru universities. Their careers were handed to them too. But as Chris half jokingly said, "If my nephews ever have to deal with the real world and predators like us they'd not last a year." I realize you comments are in jest, but @Imaginos points out a real challenge in home schooling. The ability to "get along" and other social interactions skills is a huge part of what schooling is all about. This would be even more of a challenge for people who might live in an area where there are not many kids of a similar age in the area.

I will try to navigate forward the best I can, hopefully with good results.
