Australia to ban children under 16 from social media – prime minister

Banning all phones from school premises would be a good start.

Childrens' mobile phone use/addiction is becoming a major problem for the whole of humanity, IMO.

We (society) need to wake up and do something about this.

There has to be more to life for the current generation, than endless hours of 'gaming', and posting to social media.

As for banning under 16s....it would be more beneficial to ALL, if the powers that be, and the media platform providers, used some of their billions to go after the PREDATORS !

I was just watching the Aussie news and the PM stated they're going to include gaming lobbies on phones, PS, XBox, Switch and PC.  Most, if not all, online games have these lobbies and live chat in game.  Single player games are fine but any game that is multi-player or even potentially multi-player is going to be hit so Fortnite, Call of Duty and even Minecraft etc for example.  Youtube is also in the crosshairs but not Youtube Kids (it's highly moderated).  Basically they're trying to stop any online discourse between anyone under the age of 16 for fear of "toxicity" and cyber-bullying.

Phones are already banned in Australian classrooms but are allowed in the schoolyard.

Well, schoolyard should definitely be included then. Whatever happened to face to face social interraction... as we enjoyed, during 'break time' ?

The simplest way would be to ban smart phone use by those under 16 years of age, make them age restricted products like alcohol and tobacco.

Allow under 16 the use of feature phones (Dumb phones) only.

School staff (or Police) see a young person drinking they can ask for ID, that'd work for SMART phone use also.

It'd work in first world countries anyway, not so much here 😆

Agree but there would be lawsuits about "taking away parental rights" etc.  I just don't see any type of ban working.  As other members have posted, and I am sure you agree, it is a parental reasonability to monitor and restrict time/content for kids.  But many adults, at least here in the Philippines, are just as bad as kids.  How many times have we seen clerks viewing smart phones instead of waiting on customers.  Maybe employers AND the schools need to have the phones turned in when reporting to school/work   hours?  Get them back when they leave for the day and/or at lunch and breaks.

The kids school doesn't allow phones in class already

It's just as bad with the adults in many of our home countries now.
