Interesting. It is just the opposite for me. Seems like every time I go to buy groceries I end up making a friend at the register. Even when the person's English is not great, and my Bisayan is extremely limited, they are friendly and seem to enjoy the interaction. Maybe it is because I live in the province/small town?

You're a Scot, most English speakers can't understand you so one wonders if Pilipinos have a clue what's coming out of your mouth Edited 4 hours ago by BrettGC

While It is rare for Filipinos to admit making a mistake, or ever apologize, in my 13 plus years here, I have rarely felt like I was being discriminated against. Either just the opposite, or treated like anybody else. Havent really experienced being ignored as you described either. As far as shopping goes, I was the one that went to the market (alone) for many many many years, and never felt ripped off there or like I was trying to be taken advantage of. Maybe it depends where one lives in the Philippines??? Deep province vs heavily populated areas??? Your experience is pretty much in line with mine. On another MB, a poster who had lived in Cebu for many years claimed that he had been hit from behind 5 times---mostly when he was stopped at a red light. He stated that he had to pay damages to whoever hit him from the rear every time. I'm not sure I've been lucky, rather the guy you refer to has been extremely unlucky if he's really telling the truth. Two times I've been hit, both times there was a window of opportunity for the other driver to make some kind of defence but neither did, nor did the cop entertain any BS from them. I may be naive but I reckon my experience is more the norm than the other guy's. Or, maybe this is very location specific. 1
