Jake Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 (edited) PASSING THROUGH THE main gate of the Subic Bay Freeport and leaving Olongapo City behind, the first thing that a visitor notices, aside from the changed surroundings, is the stench from Kalalake River that runs under the bridge.View the full article Being born and raised in Olongapo, this infamous river running under the bridge that leads to the main gate has always been an embarrassment and bio health hazard. Back in the days of Vietnam war, sailors and marines would use the so called "coin divers" to their own personal amusement. It was such a human tragedy because the young ladies and coin divers on small banca boats made their livelihood trying to catch the coins being tossed from the bridge. And in most cases, the coins were purposely tossed beyond the reach of the girls. You wonder where this popular phrase came from: HEY JOE, THROW ME COIN! Unfortunately, it will always be synonymous with sh..t river. And now another summit addressing the risk of losing Subic Bay to pollution is just another photo op. As Ramon Tulfo of Philippine Daily Inquirer said a long time ago: political rhetoric is like a pitcher full of warm spit.
