was sent this story by a friend Irish tourist robbed By Jeannette AndradePhilippine Daily InquirerFirst Posted 21:27:00 02/28/2010Filed Under: Robbery and theft, robbery, Crime, PoliceMANILA Philippines -- An Irish tourist was allegedly duped by a family of suspected con artists, who traveled widely with him for three days in Tagaytay and Sorsogon.John Martin McGovern, 26, temporarily staying at the Friendly Guest House in Malate, lodged a complaint with the Manila Police District General Assignment Section (MPD-GAS) on Saturday evening after he received a curious text message from the Bank of Ireland inquiring about 15 withdrawals he had made from February 22 to February 24 totaling P63, 000.McGovern was stunned by the information, claiming he had not withdrawn that amount and realized it was the same period he was with a family of nine.In his complaint, the Irish tourist claimed he arrived in the country on January 31 and met two women, who introduced themselves as Marie and Ellen at the Rizal Park and offered to tour him around Manila.During their conversation the women offered to accompany him to Tagaytay and Sorsogon and said they would divide equally the travel expenses, to which McGovern agreed.PO3 James Poso, case investigator of the MPD-GAS, said that during their trip, the women introduced several other members of their family including a Caucasian whose name the Irish national was not able to get.Poso pointed out that McGovern had admitted to getting drunk and passing out during the trip and never bothered to check on his belongings.The case investigator said that the suspects could have used the Irish tourist's credit card when he was drunk.When McGovern received the text message from the Bank of Ireland, he initially thought it was a scam but soon realized that the people he had been with were the scammers.MPD-GAS operatives are conducting follow-up operations against the suspects for their arrest.
