Just like the US... once elected, politicians stay in office for decades, dragging their spouses, children and relatives in along the way. About the only time they leave "so they can spend more time with their family" is when they get caught with their hand in the cookie jar or their pants around their ankles.Tom in Big D

The big difference between the US and RP is that RP politicians generally stay in power that long through vote rigging, vote buying, and intimidating potential opponents. There may be lifelong politicians in both countries, but the methods employed to achieve that are vastly different and not comparable at all. When was the last time you read about a US politician ordering the rape, torture, and murder of his opponent's family in order to ensure an uncontested election?

Point well taken. In the US they just insinuate that their opponent has a history of "rape, torture, and murder" in hopes the smear will stick and they can win another term in office.I guess on balance, I really should be proud of the restraint shown by our US politicians. Tom in Big D
