Jim Sibbick Posted April 10, 2011 Posted April 10, 2011 I take one multivitamin tablet every day. High in zinc and iron. If I feel something coming, I up the dose to 3 a day.Colds are gone in no time or never take hold in the first place. A couple of other things that help- Plenty of sleep.- No alcohol, as it adversely affects the body's immune system.Regards: Jim
Forum Support Old55 Posted April 11, 2011 Forum Support Posted April 11, 2011 (edited) Going in and out of AC will not be a good thing if you are prone to colds here....ergo..we don't even have one...getting used to the environ is much easier on the body....But..re: colds that hang on...if you don't go outside much and allow your body to manufacture Vitamin D ....you might find that supplementing your daily intake will be very helpful....it's suggested that one should take something in the range of 6,000 to 8,000 IUD of Vit D. DAILY......yes thousands......it's a tip i received from a med head in the midwest where we don't see the sun much from September til the next June...and it knocked out the "continual cold" thing quite well. A lot of folks seem to avoid going out in the sun here...thus they don't let their bodies make the one vitamin that we can make for free (approx 20 mins exposure to the sun {bare armed or so} is sufficient generally)...so if you are an indoor during sun shine hours.....try that...it works like a charm for me... This is good advice. I work nights my Dr has me on a good quality D vitamin from fish oil at 1000u. Edited April 11, 2011 by Old55
Bill Bernard Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 What the heck is with these long lasting colds? I almost never catch colds while back in the US, but almost every time we arrive in the Philippines, I seem to catch a cold within a week or so, and this year it is a doozie, since it just does not want to go away. One of my friends here has had the cold from before we got here this year and still seems to have it. He asked me to bring cold meds, so I did, and thankfully I brought some for myself and my wife as well. My advice would be that if you are coming this year, then you might want to bring some cold meds that work for you too since I have never had a cold that lasted more than a day or so during the last 20 plus years of my life, but this one is going on over a week, and now my wife caught it from me, and then gave it right back to me . and she never catches colds at all. Does anyone suspect that the Freon, which is still used in the Philippines irritates the throat and makes it easier to catch that cold. Every cab is an icebox, many business are cold enough to hang beef.
United Army Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 Freon might irritate the throat or lungs if you inhale it, or get in contact with it, but in the taxi I really doubt it. Sometime when I ride a taxi and its to cold for me I just ask the driver to turn it down. After reading all the posts on this thread I think some of these members get sick just by breathing the air here in the Philippines. I myself have been getting sick for the last year and a half, and just found out that the dust in the air makes me get sick, so after keeping my windows close now, using the aircon and getting a air purifier my symptoms went away and I feel allot better. Dave Hounddriver Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 On Saturday I took a trip to Olango Island. It was a beautiful day. Looking back at Cebu I could see a haze of pollution. We breathe that in daily. No wonder people get respiratory infections that last forever.
