Philippine City Holds Mass Circumcision For YouthsHundreds of boys in a Philippine city turned out Saturday for a daylong "circumcision party" to provide a safe, free procedure for a rite of passage that most local males undergo as preteens. Some boys cried in their mothers' arms while others bit their shirts to stifle sobs as doctors carried out the surgery on dozens of makeshift operating tables inside a sports stadium in Marikina city east of Manila. Outside, other boys lined up to await their turn. The rest of the snip here....http://www.npr.org/t...oryId=136081271omg.gif

This is one of the "rights of Passage" here in the Philippines that I witnessed first hand not long after my wife and I met, when one of her neighbours sons also attended one of these "mass circumcisions", although he was just a young boy, he was much older than I would have thought it healthy to experience. Being a westerner, I am used to circumcisions happening when boys are first born, but had not been exposed to it happening when they were 10, 11 or 12 years old. I was amazed by this boy walking around, bleeding and being so ...., brave.I might find this practice some what strange, but learned that it was considered just the "norm" here. Still when I hear or see this happening, I cringe with "shadow pain" for these little boys.I for one am happy that I was just a baby when I underwent this surgery, in a hospital, by a doctor and in a sterile environment! I might not understand the ways things are here, but I have learnt to accept it, and although am allowed to express my thoughts, not condemn or judge.I understand that in most cases in the Philippines, when a baby son is born, most of the parents can not afford to pay to have the circumcision done when the their son is born, as they also do not pay for the birth, or pay a very minimal amount. Which is one of the reasons this is done later when they are older, and like with a baby baptismal it is done in large groups and is free or at a small price of about 500 pesos. Having said this, I still don't understand why don't they then do it when the boy is 1 or 2 years old?Oh well, as I said earlier, for me...., I'm glad in this one area that I was not born in the Philippines!Ooooouuuuch!Papa Carl! (glad I had a daughter) Carl

If it really does take away sexual pleasure, then I think it should be illegal. Unfortunately, I'll never know, and that pisses me off. I say, if you're going to do it, it should be your choice to make as an adult. Babies have no voice and kids have no brains. This should be the age of drinking or joining the military or something.

When it comes to hygiene, the parents should be making that choice for the child. Most children have no clue how to clean the area under the foreskin and I doubt there are many parents who will clean it for them. It is probably more sanitary to be circumcised at an early age.

Well...while medical tends to agree that circumsission (localy called Tuli) is more hygenic, i never did that to my little self neither i allowed it to my son. It is mostly a matter of culture. My son comes to me sometimes telling me about his friends circumsission and when i see his terrified eyes asking me when will be his turn i answer him "you are half Greek and Spartans don't do that" he leaves with a big smile.Personaly i consider it wrong cutting something God made us with, but as i said it's a matter of culture and wouldn't disagree with doctors that it is more hygenic. Now the massive circumsissions...welcome to a country where church controls everything. They are funding most of these events (i see them here every 2-3 months). Lots of poor people who cannot or wouldn't pay 400-700 pesos for a simple operation as such. Church jumps in "no they must be as such", they preach as such and when all have heard then the public service is there,.,..bahala na!!!!!!

when on an early age it heals faster. a friend of mine had to do it on his 30's. took him more than a month to fully recover plus all the discomforts he had until then. yes to the matter of choise but early age heals faster and goes through easier. choise or a month's pain??? hard to decide, i gave the choise to my son though....

On a baby to have this done is considered minor surgery, to have it done as a adult its major surgery
