Mr Lee Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 I wonder when they will wake up and see themselves as others see them? They make it hard for people to retire here. They make it hard for businesses to do business here. The do nothing to fix the infrastructure. The insult foreigners at the drop of a hat and blame all their problems on them. and and and and and and andOK time for others to add some of their own. So will it ever change, probably not in my lifetime unless they learn to listen to others and stop getting offended when others offer advice. Way too much machismo here amongst the upper class and politicians.05/19/2011Despite the frequent breast-beating of President Aquino about the economic gains under his administration and the reforms it supposedly introduced in the business sector, the Philippines was ranked the least competitive country in Asia-Pacific with its global ranking this year falling two notches to 41st place from last year’s 39th in the World Competitiveness Scoreboard. The complete story HERE
sjp52 Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 I think someone has been in the Philippines too long. lol. Better get use to it its not going to change. Filipinos are very set in their ways, Even if you try to make a helpful suggestion they ignore it. Believe me I know . I have shown some a better ways to do a few things and should them how much better it worked only to find them going back to their way. They are who they are. I think they are asleep at the wheel like a lot of taxi drivers here, :) so when it becomes a consensus, which it has, maybe it is time to wake up and smell the roses. Many people have a hard time waking up without an alarm clock, so I feel we need to be their alarm clock, if there is ever to be hope for the country and the people we love to improve. Call me bubba Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 (edited) perhaps its time a local version of the KHMER ROUGE w/POL POT is elected.under POL POT they eliminated corruption, eradicated most outside influence. created a new form ofsocial engineering. joblessness was a thing of the past, all worked,:7522:SURE they had problems, but look at Cambodia today, :541: in many aspects they WAY are ahead of the RP. For the most part suggestions or criticisms of Philippines from Expat Foreigners will be considered meddling or bashing, and then the good ole Pinoy Pride will kick in. IMO, If ever there will be significant change it will come from the common man not from us outsiders.
ekimswish Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 As long as the politicians and business elite are well-fed and taken care of, there is NO PROBLEM. Why fix something that isn't broken FOR YOU?
Art2ro Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 (edited) I'm a Fil/Am and been in and out of the Philippines most of my entire life! I've concluded that the Filipinos in their home country will do what ever they want at any given time or place depending on their circumstances or way of life and yes, they are set in their ways of doing things wheather you like or not, because it's their Filipino traits and customs! So, it's just better that foreigners keep out of their affairs and just go with the flow, because foreigners are just visitors and have no rights or say in their political affairs! You can all moan and bitch about the Philippines, but you'll never put a dent in how they do things! All one can do is live with it or leave and go back to your home countries or elsewhere in any country you desire! Will it be any better in any other country? I think not, unless foreigners have some say in their political system! So, enough about what's wrong about the Philippines and just look at what's good about the Philippines! I get tried of hearing negative things about the Philippines! Most of you are married to Filipinas and you are all here because of them! So, always say nice things about the Philippines like you would say nice things to your wives, relatives and friends, because it keeps the peace in the household and out in the real world surrounding us all! It's the human race and for some, they are in the "rat race" of whatever country one is earning a living to survive to support their families or are just retired and enjoying life, I know I do, but it was never like this when I was still working and busting my ass! For my wife and I, we enjoy our retirement as it is today, the past is the past, we only have tomorrow to enjoy the rest of our lives! So, if the Philippines is the least competitive in Asia Pacific, so what, it's their country! Anyways, there has been a few improvements in the past 20 yrs that I've noticed, because I can feel and see the difference, JMHO! Life is what we all make it to be! Differnet strokes for different strokes! Que sera, sera! Edited May 19, 2011 by Art2ro

Differnet strokes for different strokes! Que sera, sera! It is not my intention to bash the Philippines, it seems they manage to make the whole world bash them all on their own. Our recent trip to Mindanao was eye opening, to see and realize that in 17 years there has been so little improvement, that it hurt me to realize it. It hurts me to see those in power allow things to stay the status quo and let the poor continue to be poor, or maybe that should be poorer considering the cost of living climbing, but their wages staying the same. The small changes I have seen are probably mostly due to the OFW sending money home, and those of us married to Filipinos sending money home, and those of us living here spending our money, all three seem to be what is propping up the economy here, yet it seems the govt does little to encourage any of those people, except keeping the country poor, so that more people will seek out of country work and mates. To me that is a terrible injustice when the people here are so adaptable and have so much ingenuity, that this could be a first world nation in no time if the attitude would change. I believe there is a big difference between wanting to help a place and the people and the country you love, and bashing it. The whole world is noticing, so it is my hope that those in power will wake up and do something about it. The old saying "if it ain't broke don't fix it" does not apply here IMO, so IMO apathy will no longer work. Art, I respect you and all Filipinos, but your solution of love it or leave it, and leave the status quo, will only end up tossing the country into more poverty, if those of us who live here (myself part time) leave and do not come back, then that would only mean less money spent here. I get numerous emails from people who are fed up and venting, and some have already moved away, and others have changed their minds about moving here because of the above facts, so again, IMO unless there is change, then I feel the country will only continue to go down hill. Yes my friend there has been some improvements over the years, but I believe those are mostly due to the things I listed, and not due for the most part to the govt. The more of us (foreigners, OFW, those married to foreigners, etc) who buy property and spend our money here, then the more we see change due to our money being spent and spread around. Take away that equation and then see what happens here.
