roy2cebu Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 Yesterday a friend had her pedigree pet dog snatched whilst having breakfast at a local eatery. She was familiar with the snatcher and took a male neighbour to his place to confront him. The snatcher said he had already sold the dog and spent the money.....all within an hour of the snatch. The two guys had a bit of a punch up.The woman went to the police about the snatch. The officer seemed indifferent and said if she paid him p5000 he would look into it. She refused.Don't the police get paid a salary to do their job? Where do these bastards get off?

Well at least that would be what I would do after asking to speak to his supervisor and probably getting refused. The squeaky wheel gets the oil. Yes the police get a salary here, if you can even call it that.
ekimswish Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 it's debatable.... but are you sure this needs to be in "culture"
roy2cebu Posted May 19, 2011 Author Posted May 19, 2011 Isn't most of the culture here of those with some sort of 'authority' abusing it for self gain?

ekimswish Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 Isn't most of the culture here of those with some sort of 'authority' abusing it for self gain? http://gerryruiz.wordpress.com/I like to check out this photoblog for culture. It's not all culture, either. A lot of it is just pictures of beautiful nature, but you get the odd set on a celebration, festival, or some sort of community building event. I'm kind of a hypocrite because I'm complaining about negative stuff being posted in the culture section, and yet I haven't exactly been posting all the positives either. I just don't understand most of which goes on around me. I wish I did, and maybe I would post more about the nice cultural things. The story, while interesting and I thank you for posting so I could read about it and drop my jaw in shared disbelief at the way everything went down, has more to do with poverty than culture. I guess part of the problem with us foreigners posting about culture is that we don't understand the language spoken around us, and without that, it's pretty damn hard to appreciate what people are "actually" saying and how they "actually" think. I'm sure, like humor, a lot of culture is lost in translation. Language reflects so deeply on the imagery in our heads as we communicate and express beliefs and values, that without it, understanding culture is like appreciating art without color, or cooking without taste. Maybe that's why the culture section on this forum is kind of empty, except for negative things, despite so many people living in the Philippines on a full-time basis, or part-time over many years. I'm not expert on languages, but from the little language I have picked up here and there, it always amazes me how much more I can learn about a group of people by picking up on their imagery (which is what language is in some ways). Still, speaking the dominant international language, English, we have a tendency to devalue the importance of learning other people's languages. It's weird to think that a hundred years ago, any English speaker who claimed to be "learned" would probably have learned some Latin. Nowadays it's a pretty rare thing to find. Anyways... I'm rambling again. I just think if more of us made an effort to learn a local language (dialect), we'd probably have more opportunities to write about something in the culture section. Until then, we're stuck with family feuds, money problems, and corruption. Money talks.

Sorry, have to disagree. Just a couple of days ago there was a programme on the radio where they talked of money sent by the US to help out with poverty had been misused. Those in control had stockpiled rice.....kept the majority for themselves and then it had been there so long it had to be thrown away. We don’t agree but I respect the place you’re coming from and I acknowledge you are not the only one who shares your view. IMO the Filipino culture and most of those in power are not abusive dishonest or thieves. Its true sadly some are.
Art2ro Posted May 21, 2011 Posted May 21, 2011 Don't the politicians in the U.S. do the same thing involving "EARMARK" projects in their district! So, politicians in the Philippines aren't any different, greediness just breeds more greed! It's all BS alright, because it's just like a cookie jar sitting out in the open for someone to get their greedy hands at the cookies without anyone looking! Governments should get rid of "EARMARK" projects and the "PORK BARREL" fund and setup a different way of monitoring the money for the local community or State projects! joeatmanila Posted May 21, 2011 Posted May 21, 2011 I will revert the question. What is you report the same case at a police station in NY (to say so). Is any officer going to look for the snatcher of a miniature dog???
