Somehow, even though bad things do happen I wonder if there is a need to be paranoid about safety in taxis. I know it sounds harsh but sh&t happens and in reality it only happens to a small percentage of the world population. I mean one could travel on a jeepney, get off and mugged a few steps up the road so its not the jeepney but misfortune.
don't think for a second that you can't get robbed on a jeepneymy wife has been on 2 that were held up in Manila1 time she was up front next to the driver so the bandit didn't bother herthe other time she was with her friend about 8pm & i guy jumped in & demanded money from a lady on the other side on the jeepney , my wife & her friend both jumped out& from that time on my wife will not travel that late at night unless she is with mepiglett

As I said this Happened in Manila so far taxi's in Cebu have been good no problem but in saying that I have always been with Melen as well now I think Manila is a is a place everyone should be extremely carefull of whether you are a tourist or Pinoy the provity is so much worse there than most other cities in the PI and where there is poor people robberies and other stuff happen more regularlyOur brother in law is a taxi driver in Cebu so if we need to go shopping for the day we just hire him ( mind you this still cost me an arm and leg hehehe) but he is family so I don't mind giving a bit extra on the sideI will have to try a few of those martial arts moves Lee could work to my advantage but I will let you know in the Adults section later :devil:Cheers

Just use your gut instincts or common sense and good luck to you in any mode of transportation! A hired vehicle with a friend or relative driver is much safer though!

I have had a cab driver grab my ass one time, and whistle as I walked away...but, I can't blame him. It's nice.Plenty of snatch and run on the jeepney, as well as the old drop the peso scam where your wallet will be missing once you do a good deed. This scam has been used since, well, they invented the expat. They usually travel in threes, and will get on at different intervals.Rule of thumb, do not pick up anything dropped on a jeepney...and never trust anybody, especially cab drivers in Manila or Cebu, and ladyboys around the Hotel Del Rio Casino.Oops, that was Costa Rica...sorry. :89:Believe it or not, Davao City is the one city I would trust a cab driver, as the mayor is pretty harsh on bad cab drivers. IMHO of course, as i don't know everything.... Edited by Inspector

I have seen a few stories in the news about "double plates" saw this. wish to pass it along........ A woman called the police on Monday after she spotted a taxi cab whose plate number was the same as the vehicle she owned. Supt. Audie Madrideo, Quezon City Police District (QCPD) Station 2 commander, said the driver of the taxi cab was picked up by a police team. The matter is now being investigated by the QCPD in coordination with the Land Transportation Office, he added. Madrideo said the case was reported to them by Imelda Dioquino, the owner of a school bus service vehicle with the license plate TXT 139. According to Dioquino, she was riding in the school bus service vehicle which was traveling on the northbound lane of Edsa near Cubao, Quezon City at around 3:30 p.m. on Monday when she spotted a taxi cab with the same license plate parked beside the sidewalk. Dioquino immediately reported the matter to the police who sent a team to the area to arrest the driver and impound his cab. Madrideo said the owner of the taxi cab taxi told investigators that he bought the vehicle from its owner who lives in Antipolo City. He added that they had asked the LTO to check the vehicle’s papers. Dioquino, meanwhile, told the police that this was the second time that she had spotted a taxi cab with the same license plate as her vehicle. She said that when it happened the first time, she just confronted the driver and operator of the cab who turned over the license plates to her. “But she did not report the incident as she thought it was just an honest mistake,” Madrideo saidhttp://newsinfo.inquirer.net/14951/woman-spots-%E2%80%98twin%E2%80%99-of-vehicle%E2%80%99s-license-plate-calls-cops

I cannot find a link in the web media but there was a news story about a 'sandwich' scam, (I forget the tagalog word they used but they said it meant this)You get in a taxi which is counterfeit and then the bandit gets in beside you and robs you, the targets are often female and often targeted at malls where there are a lot of taxis so the phony blends in.The story was on the Manila news, GMA I think

NEWEST ARTICLE ON TAXIS and security Abusive taxi drivers in the Philippines have gotten the attention of the United States, which warned its nationals Wednesday to take safeguards when riding taxicabs. In its country-specific information on the Philippines updated Wednesday, the US State Department issued guidelines for its nationals when taking the taxi.“Do not enter a taxi if it has already accepted another passenger and request that the meter be used. If the driver is unwilling to comply with your requests, please wait for another cab. It is also a good idea to make a mental note of the license plate number should there be a problem," it said. The problems addressed by the guidelines were similar to those encountered by Filipino commuters, especially during rush hour and peak seasons such as Christmas. On the other hand, the State Department discouraged US citizens from taking other forms of public transportation, including the Light Rail Transit, jeepneys and buses. It also urged US citizens to make sure the doors are locked and the windows rolled up when they are driving.“All other forms of public transportation, such as the light rail system, buses, and ‘jeepneys’ should be avoided for both safety and security reasons," it said.gmanews online
