I am reminded that, in the Philippines, the land owner does not necessarily own the house that is built on it. Thus, if the house owners can prove that you destroyed their house without giving them compensation, they will win a case against you. But a smart one will drag it out until you have spent a small fortune improving the value of that property so it will be easier for them to get compensated.
